July-December 2011

Introduction/Summary

Impact Southern Sudan focuses on refugees returning to their homeland in various cities and districts in the South including Juba, the capital of Southern Sudan, after 25 years of civil war. International Teams is working to establish micro-enterprises in the area, build schools, support widows and orphans, purify contaminated wells, care for lepers and the disabled, and support the spiritual development projects of our partner, the Sudan Evangelical Revival Movement (SERM).

International Teams also is excited about the development of projects through our partners on the the ground in Southern Sudan which provide such critical activity as child sponsorship, literacy training and homework programs, orphans and widows, youth, church planting and Christian formation as well as many other venues of development. These 'open source' partnerships are critical as we continue to move toward development in Southern Sudan together in unity.

Accomplishments & Highlights

School Construction

The Logu School celebrates it's full completion last year. As organizations and partners we have seen Logu and the community resourced with not only a school but also scholastic materials through the last several years and the development of an agricultural program.

Water and Sanitation

After years of war Sudan is finally in the recovery stage and though millions lost their lives, many others were able to return to their home areas. They found that the only water available to them was contaminated leaving people without clean water. The BSF is a simple local technonolgy that provides clean water for people and their households.

The BSF Water Filter project distributed and installed 120 filters from June to December 2011. Up to 10,000 people were served through the implementation of this project. As the field put it: "215 bios and filters were constructed from Jan-De 2011. Over 10,000 people were sensitized on how to maintain hygiene, improved

sanitation and bios and filters maintained." Well done to our team on the ground in Sudan.

Also during this time almost 100 water sources were tested to help sensitize people to the contamination issues of their water sources. Our Sudanese brothers and sisters want to thank Forward Baptist and other donors for their generous contribution to accomplish all that has been done including the construction of hundreds of filters to provide clean water for so many households. International Teams, the Revival Movement and their other partners are all about seeing lives and communities transformed.

Empowering Women

Empowering women is a key component in the partnership. A peanut mill project was started in 2011 and the construction has been almost completed as of the end of this term.

This income generating project is aimed to be self sustainable which means that the project will be able to cover it's own costs, generate enough revenue to pay it's employees, be free from dependence from outside donors and be free to expand its capacity to serve the surrounding community. The project will help women to provide for their families,

help with ministries in their churches and provide a venue to save for the future.

Members were trained in Jam making from fruit such as papayas, mangoes, jackfruits, oranges and pineapples. The ladies then sold the jam in the local market.

Computer Training

Computer Trainee

International Teams empowers nationals to lead and as we have continued to evolve in our partnership our partner organization on the ground, the Revival Movement, came up with the idea of training youth and working class people on how to operate computers and then providing certificates in computer applications. The partner has designed an affordable amount for each student and working class person to pay in order to improve and maintain the service which then provides the community with computer services. This project has the potential to be totally self sustaining. Some of the services provided include, computer literacy in the following packages: Introduction to basic computer use, Microsoft word and Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access,, Microsoft power point, and Microsoft publisher. In our first training the students performed perfectly and were applauded for their performance. The Revival administration was able to graduate them by awarding them certificates after the completion of the training.

Transformations

The water team continues to test water sources and during the collection of water samples the team is able to do follow up visits with

What’s New

  • We have initiated development of a clean water in Juba, the capital of Southern Sudan.
  • We have provided evangelism training and discipleship for key youth.
  • We have been able to train both leaders and lay people in the areas of organization and income generating initiatives. We are looking forward to continuing to develop in this area.
  • Often when teams go to Southern Sudan there are many donations made through gifts in kind which may include clothes for children, books, Bibles and Christian leadership materials.
  • We have developed production of food through small gardens

Challenges, Needs & Lessons

There is a need for long-term workers on the ground to help provide accountability and assistance in training and capacity building.

There is a need for a nurse or a doctor who can live on the ground for up to 3 months at a time to administer medication to lepers

There is a need for partners who can help in the area of business development and micro business as Sudan moves from relief to development

As the Sudanese struggle to prepare business plans, there is a lot more training that needs to take place to help in the development of this brand new country. We are looking for short term teams to help facilitate in these areas.

The Future

As we look forward to the new year some strategic planning needs to take place as the country is well on its way to development. We need to determine how we are going to move forward in school construction and how we will raise the necessary funds. We also will be looking into ways that the projects will become much more self-sustainable. Self-sustainability is also a key issue for our partner organization "The Evangelical Revival Movement of Southern Sudan". There are many challenges to self-sustainability but these are not barriers that the Lord Jesus Christ and His Church can not overcome.

Another area of focus for the new year is to invest in the youth of Southern Sudan. Starting the new year a youth conference will be held to train youth in various areas of life skills and spiritual development. We will start with Central Equatoria and then go nation wide with this initiative. In partnership with those on the ground and international partners we hope to empower youth in their churches, their communities, financially and spiritual formation.

We look forward to setting up a BSF project in the capital, Juba as the need for clean water is overwhelming. After meeting this His Excellency A. of the ministry of the environment in Juba steps are being taken to initiate this project.

Thank You

We also want to thank those who sacrificed their time and money to volunteer in the program in Canada and on the ground. Sudan is still in a delicate state and needs people who are willing to take these sacrificial steps. For this we thank you and God.
